Monday, August 9 (10.30-11.30 am)
Began observations today. Not sure what to expect but I did not expect to see so many people not reading given this is a bookstore. Most of the tables are occupied by people sitting alone. Six are working on their computer, one is texting (waiting for someone?), and one person is reading. The other four people–2 pairs at different tables–are drinking a beverage (arranged to meet there?). No music. Low conversation so relatively quiet. Low light (interessting as well–how can someone read). Lots of activity–in the time I observed fifteen people made a purchase at the coffee shop and left; ten of those came in for a drink and left without browsing the store.
Questions:
Why meet there?
Don’t the store folks want people to read?
Are there other coffee places around this location? Convenient?
Why isn’t someone just sitting without engaging in another activitiy?
All the people who stayed are female–is gender a factor? age?
Few children in store or coffee shop–summer, back to school time.
Observations last about 50 minutes.
